Acidic Rain

Many naturally occurring things can create acid rain from lightning to volcanoes and even pine needles dropped from coniferous trees but the majority of pollutants that cause acid rain originate from factories. Man made acid rain is a major problem in Russia and China where factories burn coal that contains large amounts of sulfur.

Acid rain can cause plant life to die and it causes many health problems for people and animals. Herbivores wont have anything to eat if the plants die so they will have to go somewhere else to find food and if the herbivores leave then the carnivorous animals will have to follow, but typically acid rain wont completely destroy ecosystems, it will usually just make it difficult for them to contain larger varieties of plant life since there are fewer species of plants that can withstand more acidic soil. Acid rain can even damage buildings, bridges and statues especially if they’re made of bronze or marble. Acid rain doesn’t have to much of an effect on people but it can still cause respiratory problems and eye irritation but humans aren’t the only thing living on this planet and we need to take that into consideration and be more aware of the massive amounts of pollutants we are releasing into the environment.

Tree Sugar

All organisms need some source of energy and the primary (and only) source of energy is from food. Now some people may say “Plants don’t eat food” and that’s kind of true but really they just get it in a different way than animals. You may remember this diagram from my last post that you probably can just scroll down a little ways to see.

As you can see this shows how plants create sugar from carbon dioxide and dihydrogen monoxide and excrete oxygen as a waste product. This sugar is the plants source of energy or its food if you want to call it that. This sugar is called glucose and it’s a rather complex molecule, which is good for plants because the energy comes from the bonds between the atoms of the molecule and when the bonds are broken apart the energy is released. This is also how animals get energy except it comes from other organisms that they eat not from water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight.
